In 1878, the first university in the Asian part of the Russian Empire was founded in Tomsk. This fact gave Tomsk its unofficial name, Siberian Athens. On a tour around the main building of the university, tourists will learn about it as an architectural monument of the 19th century, visit the ceremonial auditorium, where the House University Church used to be, and the first classrooms; they will find out where the oldest museums and halls of the Scientific Library were located at Tomsk Imperial University, they will learn what life was like for students at the beginning of the 20th century.

During his visit to Tomsk the future Emperor Nikolai II visited the University. They awarded Nikolai Romanov with a diploma of an honorary member of the university and asked him to accept the first university in Siberia under his patronage.
